DJ MAG top 100 2009

1.Armin Van Buuren

Style:
Trance/Progressive
Best known for:
A State of Trance
Gig of 2009:
Armin Only: 'Imagine', Los Angeles Sports Arena
Tune of 2009:
Neptune Project 'Aztec' (FSOE)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Jerome Isma-Ae (DJ); Cosmic Gate (Producer)
The track that changed your life:
3 Phase ‘Der Klang Der Family’ on Tresor in 1992. How the hell did they make those sounds?!

Life doesn't get any better than this. Armin Van Buuren was on his honeymoon when he got the call to say that you lot voted him the No.1 DJ in the World - for the third consecutive year.
"I couldn't believe it," he says with a huge smile. "I still can't believe it. I expected David Guetta to win so I was totally blown away. This was the least expected one. I can understand that people might think that if you win it for the third time it's not that special anymore. But, for me, it's the most special."
It makes sense that this year should mean so much. Armin's rise has been unstoppable, from his first appearance in the Top 5 in 2002 to that first inevitable win. Last year was probably the biggest year of his career, with the Armin Only: Imagine concerts and his Buma Cultuur Pop Award. But 2009 has been another a solid year for the world's favourite DJ - winning this year is the purest example that real clubbers around the world hold him in the highest regard.
One of his greatest achievements has been his A State Of Trance radio show reaching its 400th episode and the celebration was every bit as elaborate as you might imagine. Setting up an internet radio station, he grabbed a handful of DJs and travelled to three countries broadcasting the whole 72-hour party. Online radio being a statistician's dream, Armin was able to measure the success of this pioneering venture absolutely and over the three days 250,000 people tuned in.
"It was remarkable," Armin says proudly. "I asked the listeners who they wanted to see. They chose Gareth Emery, Arnej, Roger Shah, Signum and W&W. The funny thing is that on MSN I've been speaking to a lot of the DJs that played over the 72 hours and they're now in the DJmag Top 100 DJs. They thank me for that, but I tell them they should thank themselves for their great productions and the fact that people voted for them. It felt really great, you could talk to me about it for hours."
With about 250 tracks coming his way every day - "Fortunately I have someone in the office, Ruben, who helps me download of lot of the tracks," Armin says - there's still enough enthusiasm that the world's No.1 hits the online record shops frequently
"I'd rather people appreciated me for my music and radio shows and my gigs than my personal life," he says without irritation. "I understand I'm now a public figure so I have to show some of it to the people, but the reasons why I decided to marry were completely personal and I don't particularly want to share it with other people."
"I'm thrilled and deeply honoured," he says honestly and from the heart. "It feels like winning a gold medal at the Olympics."

2.
Tiesto

Style:
A bit of everything.
Best known for:
Not sure, but I can tell you that I never drank 31 cans of Red Bull in 24 hours! Gig of 2009: Victoria Park, London
Tune of 2009:
Basement Jaxx 'Raindrops (Robbie Rivera Remix)' (XL)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Avicci
The track that changed your life:
Cygnus X ‘The Orange Theme’ – after I heard this track I wanted to play trance music.

So, another massive year for Tiësto then. New album, new label, huge gigs, Ibiza residency and more high profile remixes than ever."It's been a very good year!" says the man who could quite easily be bored by it all by now. It's all pivoted around his new album, 'Kaleidoscope', a massive step forward for Tiësto as a producer, bringing in indie, electro, pop, house, techno and much more into his big, euphoric sound for the most diverse longplayer we've had from the Dutchman yet. "I wanted to make an album that brought together all the different musical influences which I am enjoying at the moment," he explains from across the US. "It still has the essence of what makes up the Tiësto signature sound, but it takes it in a whole new direction. I've taken more of a structured song-writing approach this time, as well as experimented with new sounds and textures. It's important for me to continue to break new ground musically."One of the biggest changes this year has seen Tiësto move from Black Hole to his own Musical Freedom. "I think that Black Hole has done a great job for me in the past, but I have grown as an artist and needed to make a change," he explains. "Musical Freedom is my label. It's an outlet for my evolving sound but also to release and support new music and artists that are important to me."

3.
David Guetta

Style:
From house to techno - any good music.
Best known for:
Getting people's hands in the air!
Gig of 2009:
The whole year has been magic.
Tune of 2009:
David Guetta feat Kelly Rowland 'When Love Takes Over' (Virgin) Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Afrojack
The track that changed your life:
Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' - it was the first track that I beatmatched when I was a child.

In many ways this could be David Guetta's Year Zero. That might sound ridiculous for a man who has seemingly drawn the best out of the pop and DJ world. But with his album, ' One Love', featuring superstars of the American hip-hop and r&b scene, the optimistic Frenchman claims we may very well look back on 2009 and say that this was the dawn of a new era in dance music. US urban culture has always been - Puffy excepted - pretty disdainful of dance music, but over the last 12 months Guetta has been their go-to man. "As a DJ, I play underground clubs and I play other more glamorous parties," he explains. "In Ibiza I play Pacha, but I also play Cocoon. I never wanted to choose really. It's the same for me as a producer. I can produce big pop records but I can also produce more techy and underground tracks like 'Grrrr!' I do it in exactly in the same way - with my heart and my passion." Whether or not David Guetta's 2009 is going to change dance music forever, it's clear why he's calling it the biggest and best year of his life.

4.Above & Beyond

Style:
Uplifting electronic dance music
Best known for:
Anthems like 'On A Good Day', 'Alone Tonight', 'Good For Me' and our label Anjunabeats. Gig of 2009: Our first full live show in Beirut, Lebanon.
Tune of 2009:
Super8 & Tab 'Irufushi' (Anjunabeats)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Mat Zo. He's just 19, but has a seriously big future ahead of him.
The track that changed your life:
Chakra ‘Home’

Podcasts, passport stamps, productions, internet TV shows, CD mixes, a label family that keeps chucking out anthem after anthem by the week… you've got to wonder just how Above & Beyond keep on top of it all.

"Our manager comes into the studio and puts Post-It notes under our nose with all these things we need to do because we're too busy to remember them," jokes the trance trio's Tony McGuiness. "We have someone that answers the phone for us, walks into our studio, hands it over and says, 'DJmag interview' and then we just get on with it. It's great to be busy. It's one of the surest signs of success when you've got lots of to do."

"I loved the balloon ride for the ride, I loved the rehearsing of the songs, but the actual performance was quite awkward!" admits Tony.

Jono Grant adds: "We decided to perform our first acoustic set in the most remote location - thousands of feet up in the sky - so no-one could actually hear it!"

"We are getting more and more music sent by new artists from around the world and our stable of artists is growing every year," explains Pavo. "When we came to collect tunes for our 'Anjunabeats Volume 7' CD we started from a really fortunate position."

5.
Paul Van Dyk

Style:
Trance, electronic dance music.
Best known for:
His label Vandit and 'For An Angel'.
Gig of 2009:
Central Park, New York
Tune of 2009:
Barry Jay 'Infused' (Perfecto)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Alex Morph
The track that changed your life:
The Smiths 'Hand In Glove' (Rough Trade)

"I'm a real homie," says Paul van Dyk. "I really enjoy being at home, but at the same time, I have the wrong job for that. So I wanted to say thank you to all the people who come out and see me, because they make me feel like I'm at home. This is something really special and I can't thank them enough for it. The best way, I thought, was to give them back a track. So he did. And as well as being a thank you to his party faithful, his latest single 'Home', he says, is also the first hint of what we might expect from his next album, following the release of this year's 'Best Of' collection, 'Volume'. As DJmag went to press, 'Home' was riding the top of the UK dance music chart. His album now beckons.
"I'm busy with the preparation at the moment, the writing, and some collaborating," he says, though he won't be drawn just yet on exactly who will be helping him out (Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and Jessica Sutta of The Pussycat Dolls pitched up for his last set, 'In Between', in 2007).

6
.Deadmau5

Style:
Purveyor of good times.
Best known for:
Wearing a big mouse head.
Gig of 2009:
They've all been great, but I had a lot of fun at Sonar.
Tune of 2009:
Tim Green 'Kitch In' (Dirtybird)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Moguai
The track that changed your life:
Tears For Fears 'Shout'. That turned me from a Sepultura-loving rocker and made me interested in electronic stuff.

Joel Zimmerman is clearly grinning, as he talks to DJmag from a far-flung airport lounge, midway between a manic schedule of tour dates and recording commitments. It's another typical day in the life of the DJ/producer also known as Deadmau5, and being between time zones is second nature. He's in high demand. In 2008, Deadmau5 was the young firebrand whose genre trashing electro-trance-house chimeras were making everyone from Pete Tong to François K sit up and take notice. In 2009, he's released two albums ('Random Album Title' and 'For Lack Of A Better Name'), signed to Virgin Records, and currently commands huge crowds of Mau5-mad fans with his outlandish, freaky mouse-head mask, replete with flashing eyes and rictus smirk.
Joel reveals: "I went into the designer's workshop the other week, and we got some of the LEDs working and receiving data. It's all coming together now, but I have to leave it to [Deadmau5 tour VJs] The Pixel Addicts to work out the software that's gonna run it. Hopefully it's gonna be fun!" he gleams. "We're going to finish up this year with the UK tour, head back to North America, do Australia, and finish touring this album, while playing some new music," he says.

7. Ferry Corsten

Style:
Trance Best known for: My productions
Gig of 2009:
My 'Twice In A Blue Moon: The Experience' concert in LA.
Tune of 2009:
Breakfast 'Remember' (Flashover)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Jan Oostdyk or Muzikjunki
The track that changed your life:
808 State's 'Cubik' switched me on to electronic music.

It's hard to believe that exactly a decade has passed since Ferry Corsten put the sound of Dutch trance on the global dance map pretty much single-handedly. Back in 1999 the unstoppable euphoria of Corsten's tracks as System F, Gouryella and Verracocha exploded out of nowhere to become the anthems of their day, conquering floors from England to Ibiza and storming into the UK's national charts in the process.
"It's such a blend of different styles these days, it's hard to even call it trance sometimes," believes Corsten, who has turned his hand to everything from house and progressive to drum & bass and gabba in his extensive production career."I can start with a 128 bpm track that someone might call minimal techno and then go all the way right through to 140 bpm hands-in-the-air trance with everything in between - house, techno and electro. The diversity in the genre right now really gives you a lot of space to manoeuvre as a DJ." "I felt it was time to expose a little bit more of the man behind the name," he lends. "I've done a couple of DVDs and it's always the usual stuff - me behind the decks, shots of large crowds. But we basically started filming right when my wife became pregnant. We show my gig at the Freedom festival in Holland, where I hopped from one city to another, four cities in total, and get in an army helicopter. We go to Brazil and to Lebanon and to some of the big UK festivals. It's shows both sides of the life. The waiting in airports, being away from the family, missing flights and getting burgers from a stand after a rainy festival in Ireland, to the moments on private jets or sitting in fancy restaurants. It's a beautiful life, but it's not all glory… there's a lot of hard work."

8.Markus Schulz

Style:
Not your big brother's trance!
Best known for:
Big basslines and uplifting melodies.
Gig of 2009:
Pure Prague and all of the Global Gathering events.
Tune of 2009:
Rex Mundi feat Susana 'Nothing At All' (Coldharbour)."
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Sied van Riel
The track that changed your life:
Cass 'n' Slide 'Perception'

When DJmag catches up with Markus Schulz, he's trying to take stock of the events of the past 12 months."I know that it sounds like a cliché and I'm sure that everyone says this, but 2009 was incredibly busy," he says in a drawl that seems to hang in the ether somewhere between Miami and Berlin.

"Musically, there are a lot of changes going on and I have a clear vision for the next millennium about how trance will sound," he explains. "Everything feels new at the moment, trance is reinventing itself; this is not your big brother's trance, this has a real attitude. The big snare rolls and super saw bass have been replaced by techno riffs, the kicks are no longer so overblown, it really has a weirder, more techy sound, but it still has an uplifting trance feeling." Markus claims that the new sound is "drawing the old school back in. A lot of people are attracted to what's happening now and it reminds them why they loved trance in the first place".

9.
Gareth Emery

Style:
Trance with house and prog influences
Best known for:
My new label and club night, Garuda.
Gig of 2009:
The Garuda nights in Sankey's - felt like a massive achievement.
Tune of 2009:
Andy Moor & Ashley Wallbridge feat Meighan Nealon 'Faces' (AVA) Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Jerome Isma-ae and Ashley Wallbridge
The track that changed your life:
Lost Witness 'Happiness Happening' (Data) UK progressive trance DJ/producer Gareth Emery has delivered on the potential he hinted at in previous years and made his way up to the premier league. The main reason for his rise can be explained by Emery performing at a number of key festivals for the first time, including his debuts at Global Gathering in the UK - he had played before for the festival's overseas forays - and Holland's Dance Valley. However, it was at Global Gathering that his talents and professionalism were truly tested. "I had already played my set and was happily propping up the bar when the promoter ran in a few hours later," he recalls. "One of the acts had missed his flight and Judge Jules was filling in, but he had to leave to play somewhere else so they needed someone to get on the decks. After tracking me down, the promoter bundled me into a buggy and back to the main stage, where I played a second, more nerve-wracking set," laughs Emery.
My style has changed and mutated somewhat over the years but I've always been into many of the same things, a fairly broad spectrum of music," he says. "It's difficult not to be influenced by trends; I hear the influence that minimal techno has had on trance all the time, but if anything, my sets were a little bit tougher this year because I'm playing peak-time sets instead of warm-ups. It's something that was really noticeable at the festivals, where you are given an hour or two to showcase what you do, so you play all the big records." In the meantime, Emery will continue to perform all over the world, promote the Garuda night in Manchester and develop the label in tandem. Having put out material by Riva, M.I.K.E and Emery's own 'Exposure' this year, the next step for the label is Gareth's new mix compilation. Featuring upfront tracks as well as retrospective material - which taps into a general trend towards rediscovering older sounds - 'Gareth Emery: Sound of Garuda' will be released mid-November.
10. Sander Van Doorn

Style:
Driving, melodic, euphoric and techy at the same time.
Best known for:
My spiky hair! Or maybe my remixes of The Killers, Depeche Mode and Robbie Williams.
Gig of 2009:
Mysteryland festival. I closed the main stage.
Tune of 2009:
Pryda 'Animal' (Pryda)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Ummet Ozcan… he's a Dutch producer.
The track that changed your life:
Technotronic 'Pump Up The Jam'… it made me switch to a more musical direction.

It was only ever a matter of time wasn't it? Since exploding out of nowhere with 2004 singles like the ripping tech-trance monster 'Dark Roast' and follow-up 'Punk'D', Sander Van Doorn has blazed an unstoppable trail as one of the most populist big room DJs on the planet, so it's little surprise the baby-faced Dutch genre-chameleon has busted into the Top 10 for the first time this year.

"I was definitely surprised to be put in that category in the first place - I have no idea why I was in it," admits Sander. "I wouldn't really class myself as an electro-house DJ, although I do play some electro-house in my sets. The pool I was in included Deadmau5, Eric Prydz and James Zabiela so I was really pleased to win and accept it. But then I wouldn't say James Zabiela is electro-house either!"
"We're really very critical of what we release," explains Sander. "We want to give the best young talent a platform but we're also about letting existing talent do something outside of what they're known for. Simon Patterson had a release called 'Different Feeling' that's a little more of a progressive feel to what you might expect from him, and we've got a new track by this young duo called Dysfunction, which is on a melodic minimal tip. It's just about doing something different.

11.
ATB

Style:
Melodic electronica Best known for: '9pm (Till I Come)'
Gig of 2009:
An intimate thing with only 600 people at Heat Ultra Lounge, Anaheim, California. It had the best atmosphere all year.
Tune of 2009:
Estiva 'I Feel Fine (Piano Mix)' (Enhanced Recordings)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Rudee
The track that changed your life:
Thomas Newman 'Any Other Name'

Although in this country he is unquestionably known as the man behind 1999's fifth biggest-selling single - and arguably the UK's first trance No.1 - '9pm (Till I Come)', ATB, aka André Tanneberger, has released a total of nine studio albums. In fact, the most recent, 'Future Memories', is what has taken up the bulk of his time this year, seeing the trance stalwart working outside his comfort zone and experimenting with down-tempo electronica, ethereal breaks and even a cover of Everything But The Girl's 'Missing'.
"I'm planning a mix album which will be released very soon, and I think Ministry of Sound are going to put out a single from my album." Tanneberger explains

12. Infected Mushroom

Style:
Rock trance Best known for: Making audiences go apeshit.
Gig of 2009:
Electric Daisy Carnival (USA)
Tune of 2009:
Tim Healy 'Television Is The New God (Sub6 Remix)' (Hommega) Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Randy Seidman
The track that changed your life:
Actually it was something else: Dinn Duvdevani - my son.

Onestly,i dont't understand how this guyz have this position, everybody with their taste.Of all the trance acts in the poll, Infected Mushroom - aka Israeli duo Erez Aizen and Amit Duvdevani - are the most likely to cross over to the mainstream. This year, the duo consolidated the sound they have been pushing for years with their album 'Legend of the Black Shawarma', which featured vocal contributions from Perry Farrell of iconic rock band Jane's Addiction.
"We are continuing to play the Infected sound, which is continually evolving and building," Amit explains. "'Legend of the Black Shawarma' was almost three years in the making and it encompasses rock, trance, breaks, psychedelic and many more styles," he says.

13. Sasha

Style:
House Best known for: Being the 'son of God'.
Gig of 2009:
Biel Center, Beirut with John Digweed.
Tune of 2009:
Moderat 'Les Grandes Marches' (B Pitch Control)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Nomad
The track that changed your life:
Future Sound Of London 'Papua New Guinea'.

This year has seen Sasha reunited with his old DJ partner John Digweed for a series of sets around the world, among them London's SW4 festival, Exit in Serbia and a massive show at the breathtaking Trakai Castle in Lithuania.
"Romania has such an amazing scene,' he says. 'Such a solid base of DJs. They're so committed and they have such a great sound, and they're always interested in what you're playing. The crowds are really clued up. I always do a 1st May gig on the Black Sea coast, and it is always fantastic."

14. Axwell

Style:
House
Best known for:
Slaying the world with the Swedish House Mafia.
Gig of 2009:
Avalon in Los Angeles after the Winter Music Conference. It worked out exactly how I wanted.
Tune of 2009:
Axwell/Ingrosso/Angello/Laidback Luke feat Deborah Cox 'Leave The World Behind' (Axtone)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Daddy's Groove
The track that changed your life:
My track 'Feel The Vibe'. Nothing has been the same since.

If Axwell (Axel Hedfors) has spent the last few years bubbling under and earning the props of his peers for a string of flawless productions, remixes and DJ sets, then 2009 was the year he properly exploded. Quite simply, 2009 has been the year of the Swedish House Mafia, the six-legged groove machine that comprises of Axwell and his buddies Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. "2009 has been really good," Axwell reflects, before quickly adding: "The years just keep getting better and better. Every year is the best in terms of work, gigs and recognition." "It was bound to happen," he notes sanguinely. "But at the moment I can manage it. I'm obviously worried about my long-term hearing, but, for now, I'll live."

15. Andy Moor

Style:
Melodic progressive trance.
Best known for:
DJing, producing and remixing.
Gig of 2009:
Springwave Festival, Taiwan.
Tune of 2009:
Dash Berlin, Cerf, Mitiska and Jaren' Man On The Run' (Aropa Records) Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Ashley Wallbridge.
The track that changed your life:
Vangelis 'Rachel's Song'.

"This year I have had to extend the boundaries of what I have been playing," he explains. "I've had to really go in depth on the progressive end to make sure I know what's what, but most gigs have called for me to play faster than in recent years."
Moor's AVA label also maintained a high profile in 2009, with Ashley Wallbridge, Lange and Nifra contributing releases, and Moor himself putting out two EPs. Indeed, studio work is currently taking up a big part of Moor's time; with a new compilation, 'Breaking The Silence' just released, he also plans to release remixes of Delirium and BT over the coming months. Andy adds that AVA is about to "introduce some exciting new acts into the scene," while next year, all eyes and ears are on Moor again as his artist album will be released in April.

16.
Bobina

Style:
Trance
Best known for:
Being 'Russia's No.1 DJ'
Gig of 2009:
Bobina Extended, at Gaudi Club, Moscow
Tune of 2009:
HeatBoyer 'Happy Ending (Heatbeat & Randy Boyer Mix)' (Istmo Music) Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009: Heatbeat
The track that changed your life:
Armin Van Buuren 'Communication Part II (Armin Van Buuren's Remake)'

Once he's into his stride, Bobina speaks at about a hundred miles per hour. Or should that be 150 beats per minute? He barely pauses for breath. So you could hardly accuse him of not being enthusiastic, particularly as he's just back from the Ibiza DJ Awards where he accepted the Dance Nation of the Year gong on behalf of his homeland, Russia. "It is my first international award ever," he says.

"It makes me so happy that really famous people like Ferry Corsten make remixes of my records," he says. The original version sold a none-too-shabby 40,000 copies in Russia alone.

17. John Digweed

Style:
Progressive house
Best known for:
Renaissance, Bedrock, 'Northern Exposure'... how long have you got?
Gig of 2009:
Either Vagabond, in Miami, during the WMC or a massive outdoor event I played in Beirut, in August.
Tune of 2009: Guy J 'Lamur (Henry Saiz Remix)' (Bedrock)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Joris Voorn. He's had a fantastic year and he's only going to get better in 2010.
The track that changed your life:
Donna Summer 'I Feel Love'

Although John Digweed probably wouldn't want to countenance such a suggestion, he is without doubt a living legend. His services to dance music are astounding, and when the history of our great music is finally written there'll be a chapter dedicated to the great man. Not that he's finished - no siree. The last 12 months have seen Digweed remain at the top of his game.

It's been a great year," he admits. "We all went into it knowing it was going to be tough because of the current economic climate, but the people out there have been amazing. If they're out partying, it's because they want to be there. They're more diehard."

18. Carl Cox

Style:
Funky, pumping and emotional.
Best known for:
I hope it's good music, a big smile and great times.
Gig of 2009:
Exit Festival in Serbia. I did a double team with Green Velvet in front of 30,000 people, that was pretty amazing.
Tune of 2009:
Cirez D 'On Off' (Mouseville)
Breakthrough DJ/Producer of 2009:
Alan Fitzpatrick
The track that changed your life:
Chip E 'Time To Jack', an acid-house record that sounded alien when it was released.

When it comes to rocking down the house, few do so with the panache of party techno supremo Carl Cox. One of the architects of dance music, this DJ's DJ has continued to blaze a trail through the years, innovating and pushing the movement forward, without sacrificing one iota of his passionate beliefs.
"The closing was just phenomenal, with Danny Tenaglia playing in one area, and me playing from beginning to end in one room. The job was done, we got the point across and we're looking forward to more Join Our Revolution nights in the future," Cox smiles.

The track that changed your life:
Our first Cosmic Gate single 'The Drums' changed our life completely.

Cosmic Gate's 2009 has been one largely geared around the release of 'Sign Of The Times', their fourth artist album. It's been backed, says Stefan Bossems, by an incredible run of release parties all over the world. "It's definitely been our busiest DJing year ever," he smiles. "We had an amazing early summer tour in the US, playing 14 gigs in four weeks." "Some great nights in Ibiza too!" adds partner, Nic Chagall. "We're going to play on the amazing Boombox stage! We've not been to Australia for nearly two years and that makes us look forward to it all the more. "Next year will see our mix series 'Back 2 Back', er, back and then it'll be full steam ahead a new artist album."

The track that changed your life: Daft Punk's 'Homework'. It got me into house music.

Much like his Swedish House Mafia cohorts Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell, 2009 was the moment that all those years of hard work finally paid off for Steve Angello. Ibiza was conquered, work on his album continues apace and his collaboration, alongside Ingrosso, with Pharrell Williams is nearing release. But most importantly, people want to work with him.
The success of David Guetta has meant that I can go to the big labels now and they're ready to talk," he says. "Lots of artists, big artists, are making themselves available for my album."
"It's unbelievable how things have turned around," he says. "It's been my best year without a doubt."

Daft Punk

Since they started making music in 1995, Daft Punk's legend has mushroomed. These days, they're lesser-spotted than the likes of Prince. If they are sighted, they're usually wearing robot masks, so you're never really sure if it's them, anyway. One thing is for sure - they still cut it as DJs (otherwise they wouldn't be in this poll), even if it's more about their legend than their actual gig schedule.

It's been a hectic year for the French duo since last year's Top 100 DJs list was revealed. Not least of their achievements has been scooping themselves a Grammy award - they took home the gong for Best Remixed Recording for their re-rub of MGMT's 'Electric Feel', deftly avoiding Kanye West while they were at it - while U2 picked them to remix the lead track 'Get Your Boots On' from their last album 'No Line On The Horizon'. They had a pop at Lenny Kravitz's 'Let Love Rule' too, and turned in a show-stopping performance at the US festival Coachella, in spite of claiming to be quitting live shows altogether just a few months earlier. Doubtless the crowd appreciated their capricious behaviour, if nothing else.

Villalobos' tripped out, extended sets were a regular feature in clubs like Fabric, Panorama Bar and at Sven Vath's Cocoon residency in Ibiza. Despite his marathon weekend sets, Villalobos was no slouch in the studio either, with releases this year on his own Sei Es Drum label as well as new EPs for Barraca and Sundance and a wonderfully deep and dubby joint release with long-term friend and collaborator Jay Haze on the US producer's Contexterrior label.

Their name might sound like some pony psy-trance act from the trippy hippy atrocities of the mid-'90s, but Russian duo Moonbeam are well deserving of their debut landing in this year's Top 100. "Our favourite dance music artists are people like Röyksopp and Zoot Woman, and the latest Oliver Koletzki album impressed me," explains Pavel on their inspirations. "We don't listen so much to trance or techno. As for our main inspirations, they are often far from dance styles. I like Thom Yorke, Massive Attack, Björk, because this music has no limits, no borders. It inspires you to make experiments with your own music."
